If you checked your phone on Monday morning in the UK and saw the scoreline “Uruguay 2–2 Cape Verde,” you probably blinked twice.

Not because draws are unusual — but because of who Cape Verde are, and what they keep doing at this World Cup.

Most people would have seen an 11pm kick-off and thought the same thing: work in the morning, sleep is safer. But those who stayed up didn’t just watch a match — they witnessed one of the standout games of the tournament.

    Attiva/disattiva
    • Cape Verde refuse to be “just a story”
    • A free-kick that changed the mood
    • Fearless football against a giant
    • Uruguay hit back, but Cape Verde never looked broken
    • A team bigger than expectations
    • More than a surprise — a statement

Cape Verde refuse to be “just a story”

Cape Verde have already made headlines by holding pre-tournament favourites Spain to a goalless draw. That result alone felt like a shock. But this second performance — against two-time world champions Uruguay — confirmed it wasn’t a fluke.

A nation of roughly half a million people, facing one of football’s most established teams, and walking away unbeaten again. This time, though, they didn’t just defend. They played.

And they played with confidence that felt almost fearless.

A free-kick that changed the mood

The breakthrough came from distance and pure technique. Kevin Pina stepped up for a free-kick and curled it straight into the corner — no hesitation, no safety-first approach. Just belief.

Before that moment, Cape Verde had already shown flashes of ambition. Telmo Arcanjo surged forward on a brilliant solo run from his own half, gliding past Manuel Ugarte and drawing a yellow card from Rodrigo Bentancur.

This wasn’t a team sitting back and hoping. This was a team trying things.

    Fearless football against a giant

Even when they were level, Cape Verde didn’t retreat into survival mode.

Garry Rodrigues — once juggling football with a job as a postman — embarrassed former Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela with a sharp nutmeg that lit up the stadium. In midfield, Jamiro Monteiro played with swagger, flicking passes over Uruguayan players as if pressure didn’t exist.

Then came the second goal — a moment of pure instinct from substitute Helio Varela, who had only just stepped onto the pitch. Spotting goalkeeper Fernando Muslera off his line, he lifted the ball over him and watched it drop into an empty net. A World Cup goal made to look like a training-ground trick.

Uruguay hit back, but Cape Verde never looked broken

Uruguay did eventually respond, but even that felt more like circumstance than dominance. Cape Verde were down to 10 men at the end of the first half after Arcanjo, struggling with injury, stayed on the pitch and was caught out twice defensively before the break.

Still, those were Uruguay’s only real openings. For large stretches, Cape Verde’s structure and discipline frustrated them completely.

And when they did defend, they didn’t just survive — they cleared, blocked, and competed. Sidny Lopes Cabral battled relentlessly, while centre-backs Pico Lopes (born in Dublin) and Diney Borges racked up clearance after clearance, repelling pressure like a wall.

Even against Spain, that defensive resilience had been clear. Now it was paired with attacking confidence.

    A team bigger than expectations

There were moments that summed up their mindset perfectly: a corner nearly taken directly to catch Muslera, and even an audacious attempt to chip him from halfway. This wasn’t recklessness — it was self-belief.

    And that belief is spreading.

Cape Verde now head into their final group game against Saudi Arabia knowing qualification is still possible. Beat them, and they may just extend their story into the knockout rounds — possibly setting up a meeting with Argentina and Lionel Messi in the Round of 32.

    More than a surprise — a statement

Whatever happens next, Cape Verde are no longer just a feel-good underdog story.

They are organized, fearless, and increasingly comfortable on football’s biggest stage.

And right now, at this World Cup, they’re not just winning admiration — they’re winning attention.
