Griezmann Bids Emotional Farewell as Atlético Edge Girona; Real Madrid Win in Seville
Antoine Griezmann’s final appearance at the Metropolitano ended in fitting fashion on Saturday night, as Atlético Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Girona in an emotional La Liga encounter. Elsewhere, Real Madrid continued their strong finish to the season with a narrow win over Sevilla, although the Andalusian club have already confirmed their place in Spain’s top division for next season.
For Atlético supporters, however, the evening was about much more than three points. It was a chance to say goodbye to one of the club’s modern legends. Griezmann, whose influence on Atlético Madrid over the years has made him a fan favorite, received a hero’s farewell from the Metropolitano crowd.
Facing a Girona side desperately fighting to avoid relegation, Atlético knew they would be tested. The visitors started brightly, with Azzedine Ounahi threatening from a free kick and Jan Oblak producing an important save to deny Vitor Reis’ spectacular acrobatic effort. Girona also looked dangerous through Joel Roca, whose impressive run deserved a better finish from Bryan Gil.
But Atlético gradually found their rhythm, and it was no surprise that Griezmann played a central role in the breakthrough. Just after the fifteen-minute mark, the French forward delivered a perfectly weighted pass for Ademola Lookman, who calmly finished to give the hosts the lead. Moments earlier, Griezmann himself had come inches away from scoring when his effort crashed against the crossbar.
Lookman thought he had doubled Atlético’s advantage shortly afterward, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Girona refused to back down and continued pushing for an equalizer, while Atlético relied on the composure of Robin Le Normand at the back to keep control of the match.
As tension grew in the second half, Diego Simeone introduced fresh legs, bringing on Thiago Almada in an attempt to secure the result. Griezmann nearly crowned his farewell night with a goal of his own late on, but Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga stood firm. At the other end, Oblak once again showed his class with a brilliant save in the closing stages to preserve Atlético’s lead.
Girona threw everything forward in stoppage time and came painfully close to snatching a point, but Atlético held on. The result means Girona’s survival battle will go down to the final day of the La Liga season.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid earned a 1-0 victory away to Sevilla, continuing their impressive domestic campaign. Despite the defeat, Sevilla have done enough to secure their status in La Liga for next season and avoid any late drama in the relegation fight.
